Software Setup

NoteComing Before The Semester Starts

Detailed setup instructions for Julia, VS Code, Git, and GitHub will be posted here before the first day of class. If you want to get a head start, the Spring 2026 setup pages are a reasonable guide and little will change.

What You Will Need

  • Julia (1.11 or later). We provide notebooks and package environments for Julia, and the course staff can best support you in it.
  • VS Code, with the Julia extension.
  • Git and a GitHub account. Mini projects are distributed as GitHub repositories that you fork, so you will need an account.

You are welcome to use another language — R and Python are both perfectly reasonable for everything in this course — but we may be limited in the programming help we can offer. We’re happy to try.
